413 – 415) Nov 9 – 19, 95, and 97 sent  to Henry Ct in Earl at 1436 hours for a brush fire. Asst 19 arrived on location and reported a working fire running along Powerline Rd. He requested Berks dispatch three alarms for apparatus and personnel. a Special request was made for additional ATVs. As the fire continued to spread, it began to threaten nearby structures. Responding department were sent to two additional sites on Stetler Ct and Laurel Rd to prevent spread to these exposures. Multiple dead trees were also involved and needed to be cut down. PA’s DCNR was on scene and fire personnel worked with DCNR sawyers to cut up these trees once they were felled. Multiple departments from across Berks and into Montgomery County were on scene. Red Cross was on scene to assist displaced family. 97 crews returned at approximately 0100 hours. 97 apparatus on scene included Engine 97, Rescue 97, Attack 97 and Tankers 97 & 97-1.

276) Aug 4 – 97, 95, 58, Montco 65 (RIT) and 505 dispatched for a structure fire, reported to be the basement, on Lindy Dr in Washington. EBFD Fire Chief Mike Mutter quickly arrived on location, and confirmed a working basement fire and requested Engine 97-1 to stretch a line to the rear of the dwelling where there was a walk-in basement entrance. Fire was located in a basement bedroom and quick work by the crews from Engine 97-1, as well as Engine 97, and Ladder 95 knocked down the fire. There was heavy smoke throughout the house, causing the crews to use smoke ejectors to clear the house. The assignment was held to 97, 95 and 505. In the 90 degree heat, EMS provided a cooling station and hydration. Just the day before crews had fought a hay wagon fire in equally hot conditions. On scene for EBFD were Engine 97-1, Engine 97; Tanker 97-1, Utility 97.

250) July 5 – Early Tuesday morning at 0156 hours on July 5th, Eastern Berks Fire, along with Boyertown, Hereford, Pennsburg and Bally Medics were dispatched for the report of a shed on fire in the 300 block of Lenape Rd Washington Twp. EBFD Deputy Chief Chris Schaeffer arrived and assumed command and reported multiple sheds on fire and added 2 more tankers. EBFD Engine 97 arrived and laid 200′ of 5 inch supply line down a dirt lane and went into service with multiple lines to knock down the fire in what turned out to be multiple sheds, a camper, and an old saw mill. Engine 97-1 picked up Engine 97’s lay and supplied them while being fed with water from the tankers which had responded. A tanker fill site was established by Engine 19 at the EBFD station in Bechtelsville. Fire Police controlled traffic around the scene and the fill site. Crews from the responding departments did extensive overhaul and returned in about 2 hours. Fire departments which responded were: Eastern Berks, Boyertown, Hereford, Earl, Topton, Pennsburg, Gilbertsville, and New Hanover, along with Bally Medics. EBFD units on location: Engine 97, Engine 97-1, Tanker 97-1, Attack 97 and ATV 97.

249) July 3 –  97 and 505 sent for an ALS Medical on 9th St in Bally. Additionally 97 personnel drove the medic unit to allow both medics to attend to patient.

248) July 2 – ATV 97 was dispatched to assist 505 and Montco 38  with an ALS Medical at Butter Valley Gold Port in Upper Hanover.

247) June 30 – Firefighters from Eastern Berks Fire and surrounding areas were dispatched on Thursday June 30th to a two alarm house fire on Woods Lane in rural Washington Twp in Berks County. EBFD chief Mike Mutter arrived shortly after the 11:14pm dispatch to report fire and heavy smoke in a residence down a long driveway. Because if it’s location, he requested additional resources in the form of two extra tankers and a second alarm for more personnel.  Engine 97-1 laid 700 feet of five inch line which was supplied by Engine Tanker 58 and Tanker 97-1. Firefighters entered and knocked the fire inspite of intense heat trapped in the structure. Fire Departments on scene included Eastern Berks, Hereford, Boyertown, Pennsburg, Seisholtsville  Gilbertsville, Topton, and New Hanover; along with medic units from Bally and Boyertown. Fire Police from Eastern Berks, Boyertown and Hereford helped control traffic on Kulps Road were many of the apparatus were parked, while personnel made the climb up the narrow country road. Units were on scene for more than two and a half hours.

173) May 5 – Company 97 was dispatched at 0814 hours to the Bally Block Company in Bally for a possible fire in the wood hog. Chief 97 arrived and confirmed the report. Engine 97-1 arrived first in and stretched a 1 3/4 line and extinguished the fire in the wood hog. Additional 97 personnel were sent to the roof to check for extension into the saw dust towers. After checking with the TIC it was determined that there was fire in the bags that are in the towers. Chief 97 requested the full 1st alarm be dispatched bringing Companies 95,58, Montco 65 and Montco 37 for Rit. Sprinklers activated in the tower and extinguished the fire in the bags. Crews monitored the area that was burning and after it was determined the fire was out the scene was turned over to maintenance. 97 units on scene Engines 97 & 97-1 Tankers 97 & 97-1 & Rescue 97. Thanks to all the mutual aid companies that assisted.

Engine 49 personnel went into an interior attack, holding the fire to the garage and front part of the structure. Additional manpower from surrounding companies arrived and assisted with fire suppression, water supply, fill site, and fire police. Crews encountered tough conditions due to the location and were in service throughout the evening. The fire was placed under control and crews began extensive overhaul. EBFD apparatus on scene included Engines 97 and 97-1, and Tankers 97 and 97-1.

The home was back a long drive and some apparatus staged on the road, while others were able to make it into the scene.

MVA took down pole and high tension wires which blocked Rt 73. Traffic 97 operated for more than 90 minutes until Met Ed cleared the pole and wires, and Berks-Mont Towing removed the vehicle.

35) Jan 24 – 97, 39, 21, Lehigh 30 (RIT) and Medic 575 were dispatched at 0051 hours for Chimney Fire on Treichler Rd District Twp. Deputy 97 arrived and reported the fire extended into the roofline.
     Chief 97 assumed command and the Deputy assumed interior ops. Command requested 2nd alarm as a precaution die to delayed response of personnel and apparatus because of icy roads from an earlier snowfall.
     Engine 97-1 arrived and laid 400 ft of 5 inch supply line from the first bend in the driveway. Engine 97 laid 1000 ft of 5 inch from the road to complete Engine 97-1’s lay. Crew from Engine 97-1 stretched one line to attack the fire from the interior, while Ladder 21 knocked the fire on the exterior.
     Due to the quick knock down the 5 inch was not charged and most of the 2nd alarm companies were recalled.
Thanks to all our mutual aid departments for the assist and to the crew from Tanker 58 who assisted repacking the 5 inch on Engine 97.

2) Jan 1 – 95, 97, Montco 67 and 525 were dispatched for a structure fire on BrickYard Lane in Colebrookdale. Deputy 95 reported a working fire in a workshop, with exposure to two other buildings. 97 personnel from the Engine and Attack assisted with fire suppression, Rescue 97’s crew set up RIT, and Tanker 97 supplied water to Engine 95. Crews went into service with 3 lines and knocked the bulk of the fire quickly. All exposures were checked thoroughly. Crews awesome job keeping the bulk of the fire to the main fire building, although there was some slight extension to one exposure. EBFD units on scene: Engine 97, Attack 97, Rescue 97, Tanker 97 and Traffic 97.

Fire Police diverted traffic for almost 90 minutes until Medics completed their work, debris was cleaned up, Berks Mont Towing removed the vehicles, and PennDOT salted the road. EBFD units on scene Attack, Rescue, Utility and Traffic 97.

394) Nov 13 – 39, 58, 21, 97 505, 575 were dispatched at 1014 hours for the report of a structure fire in the 300 block of Conrad Rd in Hereford. Multiple reports were quickly made of heavy smoke visible from a distance. The location was Mituo Village, home to the Amitabha Buddhist Society of Philadelphia, part of the former Camp Mensch Mill. The fire quickly went to three alarms, with apparatus and personnel from Berks, Montgomery, and Lehigh Counties among those responding.  A tanker fill site was set up at Huff’s Church and Benfield Rds, Fire Police from multiple departments assisted with traffic control. First arriving officers confirmed a motorcycle vs a car. Responders assisted with patient care, while fire police from Eastern Berks, Hereford, Boyertown, Pennsburg, East Greenville, Red Hill and Gilbertsville controlled traffic around the scene for three and a half hours while a State Police accident team reconstructed the incident. Thank you to all our mutual aid fire police! On Tuesday we learned from news report that the motorcyclist died from his injuries. Our prayers and condolences to his family and friends. 301) Sep 2 – Eastern Berks Fire was requested by Montgomery County at 2255 hours to respond as a second RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) to assist Upper Frederick Fire with a second alarm working fire in a series of row homes in the 1200 block of Pine Ridge Dr, Upper Frederick Twp. Rescue 97 responded and staged on side 1 with our RIT equipment. No intervention was needed during active firefighting. Our personnel were then used to overhaul the second floor of a home adjacent to the fire origin. The fire involved 3-4 units of a row of Townhouses. Many departments from the surrounding community were dispatched to assist with equipment and personnel. Rescue 97 was back at station around 0220 hrs.

273) Aug 21 – 97 was part of the structure assignment dispatched at 0557 hours for a house fire in the 7800 block of Boyertown Pike (Rt 562) in Earl Township. Dispatched were apparatus from 19, 95, 49, 97, 525 (and later 5, and Montco 67). Asst 19 arrived with smoke showing and declared a working fire. Making the response from 97 were Engine 97, Tanker 97, Attack 97 and Rescue 97. While this part of our crew was fighting fire, another part was setting up for the annual chicken barbecue in Bally. One does wonder at times whether our primary purpose is raising funds to buy equipment to fight fires, or actually fighting them!

Deputy 97 responded that apparatus on location would respond to that call. 505 told county they would respond as they were returning from dropping their patient off at the hospital. Rescue 97 and Utility 97 took the call, and found a vehicle into a tree with a door to be popped for patient access.

201) June 27 – 97 and 505 were dispatched at 0739 hours for an MVA, truck and car, with unknown injuries on Rt 100 just south of Limekiln Rd. in Washington. Enroute, county upgraded the notes to indicate at least one injury. Deputy 97 arrived and found a head on crash between a box truck and a car, with the car over the embankment. Additional medic units were requested, bringing 525 and 332 for multiple patients. Deputy 97 also requested that fire police be sent to control traffic around the scene. 97, 95 and Montco 67 fire police responded. 97 apparatus on scene included: Rescue 97, Attack 97, Brush 97, and Utility 97.

200) June 26 – 97, 19, 95, Lehigh 1 (RIT) and 525 were dispatched Kemp Rd District Twp for a Dwelling Fire possible entrapment, reported deck on fire, Chief 97 arrived and reported owner had bulk of fire knocked down and negative entrapment, assignment was held to the 97 units. Engine 97-1 stretched trash line to wet the area down, crews checked for extension which was negative. 97 units on scene: Engine 97-1 Engine 97, Tanker 97-1, Tanker 97, Attack 97 and Utility 97.

Crews worked together using hydraulic tools to remove door and post in order for EMS to remove patient. 97 Fire Police assisted 58 and 39 with traffic control. Rescue 97 and Utility 97 were on scene.

191) June 15 – 95, 97, Montco 67 and 525 sent for a possible structure fire – reported to be heavy black smoke – on N Reading Ave in Colebrookdale. Assignment held to 95 and 97.

190) Jun 14 – 97 and 19 were sent for a transformer explosion on Diener Rd in Pike. While enroute, 97 apparatus encountered a tree which had fallen bringing down wires on Old State near Hill Church Rd. Apparatus from 19 confirmed there had been a transformer fire nearby on Diener Rd. Met-Ed was notified about both locations and 19 and 97 were made available.

189) June 14 – While still on the scene of the previous incident, Engine 97-1 was sent at 0619 hours to assist 58 and 39 at an MVA on Huffs Church Rd in Hereford. Chief 58 indicated no need for fire service.

188) June 14 – 97 and 505 were sent at 0551 hours for an MVA with Injuries on Rt 100 at Wheeler Lane in Washington. Personnel assisted with patient care, debris removal, and traffic control for almost one hour.

175) June 6 – 97 and 505 were dispatched at 0715 hours  for an accident on Rt 100 in front of Jakes Flea Market in Washington. Initial reports indicated one the of vehicles involved was off the road into the brush. EBFD officers were on scene shortly after dispatch and confirmed the dispatch report and added that there were two vehicles in traffic and another off-road. Chief 97 informed Rescue 97 that there was extensive debris on the road to clear and tools were needed to access the patient in the vehicle off-road, now surrounded by trees and brush. Fire Police from 97 and 95 controlled traffic around the scene for an hour, while patients were cared for and transported by medics from Bally and Gilbertsville; and vehicles and debris were cleared.

148) May 17 – 95, 97, 19 and 525 were dispatched at 1326 hours on Monday May 17 for a dwelling fire in the 1600 block of Weisstown Rd Colebrookdale Twp. Eastern Berks Regional Police arrived and reported fire through the roof. Engine 95 arrived with Engine 97 right behind them, and crews from both engines went into service with multiple lines, quickly attacking the fire. Chief 95 struck a 2nd alarm for additional personnel. Deputy 97 was Operations officer. Tanker 97-1 and Tanker 97 provided water to the two Engines along with other tankers from mutual aid companies. Tankers were filled by an engine from Earl at a hydrant near the Walmart. Co 97 returned to station around 1700 hrs. EBFD units on scene: Engine 97, Rescue 97, Tanker 97, Tanker 97-1 and Utility 97.

147) May 16 at 1005 hours, 97 and 58 were dispatched with Brush Trucks and Tankers to assist Montco 38 on a Brush Fire on Gehman Rd, Upper Hanover Twp Montgomery Co. 97 units assisted with extinguishing a large Brush pile, crews had to shuttle water with the Brush trucks numerous times to extinguish the fire, due to no access with larger apparatus. Montco 65 and 71 were also dispatched to assist. 97 Units on scene Brush 97, Brush 97-1, Brush 97-2, Tanker 97, Tanker 97-1 and Traffic 97.

121) Apr 20 – 97, 19 and 505 were sent at 0532 hours for an MVA with fire at Koch and Wellers Roads in Pike. Crews arrived to find a vehicle which had struck large boulders and had been burning for some time. Personnel searched for a driver, but found none in the area.

120) Apr 18 – 97 and 525 sent for an ALS Trauma (fall) at the community park in Bally.

119)  Apr 17 at 0101 hours, Engine 97-1 was called back to Topton to assist with a rekindle which was discovered before Station 21 had even left the fire scene. Along with fire personnel from other departments, EBFD crews operated for a few hours, before once again being released.

118) Apr 16 – Engine 97-1 requested at 2209 hours by Topton Command to report to scene of working structure fire on Washington St in Topton with personnel to assist with overhaul at a multiple dwelling – 2 alarm fire.

104) Apr 6 – At 1341 hours, Eastern Berks, Bally and Oley Medics and additional apparatus from Earl and Seisholtsville were sent to the unit block of Groff Rd in District for the report of a half acre on fire. Deputy 97 took the lead on this assignment and reported multiple acres with fire extending in tree lines on all sides of the fire, some close to a home. Additional units were added from Boyertown and Hereford. EBFD units on scene included Brush 97, 97-1, and 97-2, Engine 97-1, Attack 97, Tankers 97 & 97-1, Utility 97 and Traffic 97. In service for 90 minutes.

103) Apr 6 – At 1340 hours, Eastern Berks and Bally Medics were sent to the unit block of Lenape Rd in Washington for the report of fire along the tree line. Chief 97 arrived and reported a working fire. Handled by Brush 97-1 and Tanker 97-1, who then relocated to Groff Rd fire.

102) Apr 5 – 97 sent for an AFA on Limekiln Rd in Bechtelsville

101) Apr 5 – 97 and EMS sent for an ALS Medical on Main St in Bechtelsville

100) Apr 5 – 97 and 39 were dispatched to the 100 block of Treichler Road in District for a brush fire. Chief 97 arrived and confirmed a working fire. Both companies worked about 1 hour to contain and extinguish the fire. 97 units on scene Brush 97, 97-1 & 97-2, Tankers 97 & 97-1, Engine 97-1, and Attack 97.

99) Apr 4 -At 1617, EBFD and Bally Medics were sent for an ATV accident with injuries at Passmore and Wilt Rd in Washington. Gilbertsville Medics were added for a second patient.

98) Apr 4 – At 1456, Tanker 97 was added as part of the Second Alarm for a large working brush fire on Kutz Rd in Alsace, which including vehicles as well.

97) Apr 4 – At 1449, EBFD and Boyertown Medics were sent for an ALS Medical in Spring Vally Village in Washington

89) Mar 31 – 95, 97, Montco 67 and 525 were dispatched at 0218 hours for the report of fire from the rear of an industry on Washington St in Boyertown. After investigation, assignment held to 95 units.

88) Mar 30 – 95, 505 and Fire Police from 95, 97, and Montco 67 dispatched for report of 5 vehicle crash on Rt 100 near the Walmart in Colebrookdale. Report of tractor trailer overturned onto car with entrapment and fire. Based on report, 95 officers requested Rescue 97 and additional Medic Units be dispatched to assist with the extrication and patient care. When crews arrived, they found a pick up truck hauling a trailer with a car overturned onto another car, with a fourth vehicle with heavy damage. Rescue 97 was returned, while crews from Attack 97 assisted before going available. Area fire police, including 97, assisted in traffic control for nearly two hours, until the scene was cleared.

49) Feb 19 – 97 dispatched at request of EMS to Limekiln Rd in Washington to assist with an ALS Medical.

48) Feb 18 – 97 and 505 sent for an ALS Medical off of Dale Rd in Washington

47) Feb 14 – 95, 67,97 and 525 were dispatched at 0212 hours for a possible structure fire in the 300 block of S Reading Ave in Boyertown. After investigating, Chief 95 held the assignment to Engine 95 and Ladder 95.

46) Feb 12 – 97 and 505  were dispatched at 0602 hours for an MVA involving a pole and wires in the 2400 block of Old Rt 100 in Washington. Power was out in the area on a bitter cold morning. Met-Ed and Windstream were both notified. Crews assisted with patient care and debris clean up, and were available within 45 minutes. Fire Police remained on the scene until PSP, the tow company and Met-Ed arrived. The power company determined that the pole will need to be replaced.

45) Feb 11 – shortly after returning from the previous fire, 95, 67,97 and 525 were dispatched for a structure fire on Philadelphia Ave in Boyertown. Originally, 95 was sent for an AFA, but police quickly arrived and found an odor of something burning and the assignment was upgraded. After investigation, burned food was located in one of the apartments and the unit was ventilated.

44) Feb 11- Eastern Berks Fire was dispatched at 1303 hours on the second alarm to assist Boyertown and Amity on a working structure fire in the 1200 block of Reading Ave (Rt 562) in Douglass Twp, Berks County. Sent along with EBFD, was apparatus from Gilbertsville, Earl, New Hanover, Upper Pottsgrove, West End – Stowe. and Exeter. Responding from EBFD was Engine 97, Rescue 97, Tanker 97 and Tanker 97-1. Crews from Engine and Rescue worked on fire suppression, while tankers crews fed water to Engine 49-1, and later Engine 95 which was feeding a five inch supply line down the driveway to the fire scene which included a two bay garage and numerous vehicles. EBFD was on location for almost 3 1/2 hours.

43) Feb 8 – 97 and 505 sent for a Rescue of a patient in the woods off of Kulps Rd in Washington. Rescue 97, Engine 97, and Utility 97 responded and personnel packaged and carried the patient to the waiting medics.

42) Feb 8 – 97 and 525 sent for an ALS Medical on Chestnut St in Bechtelsville

41) Feb 6 – 97 and 525 sent at 0132 hours for an ALS Medical on Lenape Rd in Washington

40) Feb 4 – 97 and 332 sent for an ALS Medical on 8th St in Bally

24) Jan 26 – 97, 95 and Montco 65 were sent at 0052 hours to assist Montco 67 and 37 on a working fire in the 200 block of Hoffmansville Rd in Douglass, Montgomery. 67 and 37 had a large shed fully involved five feet from a home, with extension to the dwelling. As Rescue 97 and Engine 97 were enroute, the fire was contained and we were returned.

7) Jan 10 – 97 and 39 sent for a Structure Investigation of the report of flooding in a basement on Huff’s Church Rd in District

6) Jan 8 – 97 and 505 were dispatched at 0912 hours to the 900 block of Route 100 in Washington Township for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment. EBFD Deputy 97 arrived to find one vehicle up an embankment, leaning on a pole. Rescue 97 was ordered to deploy high reach stabilizing jacks in order to be able to reach the patient. Fire Police from Eastern Berks, Boyertown and Gilbertsville closed Rt 100 and redirected traffic for an hour while crews worked. Personnel from Rescue 97 and Attack 97 worked to stabilize the vehicle and remove the passenger side door so that the driver could crawl out. Crews stood by while Berks-Mont Towing removed the vehicle, and then assisted with clean up. EBFD units on scene: Rescue 97, Attack 97, Utility 97, Brush 97, Traffic 97

5) Jan 7 – 97 and EMS were sent to S. Seventh ST in Bally for an ALS Medical

4) Jan 5 – Fire Police from 97, 95 and Montco 67 were sent to control traffic around the scene of an MVA in Colebrookdale, but 97 and 95 FP were already committed to the fire scene in Bally.

3) Jan 5- Fire Departments from Eastern Berks, Boyertown, Hereford and Pennsburg were dispatched at 2005 hours to the report of a house fire in the 100 block of North 4th Street in Bally Borough. Chief 97 quickly arrived on location and reported heavy fire in one home of a four unit townhouse, with possible extension into adjacent units. Crews from Eastern Berks’ Bally Station, located two blocks from the scene, quickly arrived and pulled multiple hand lines to attack the fire and protect the exposures. Personnel from the Bechtelsville station were soon on scene, along with firefighters from the other three departments. The bulk of the fire was knocked with extension into the loft and smoke damage to the units on either side. All resident escaped and a pet cat was located safely. Met-Ed and UGI were on scene to secure utilities, in addition to EMS on stand-by, and Boyertown Water Rescue to fill air cylinders used by the firefighters. Fire Police from Eastern Berks and Boyertown control traffic around the scene. The Bally Borough fire marshall, along with the State police Fire Marshall are investigating, but it does not appear suspicious.
