Eastern Berks Fire is in the process of using state grant money to purchase and outfit a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV). UTVs are built and used for work, as opposed to the more familiar ATV, which is used primarily for recreation.
UTVs are large, powerful, able to seat passengers side by side, built with storage space, and room for a “skid unit” insert for brush fires.
This UTV will serve the department in a variety of ways, among them are: a) replacing a 50+ year old Jeep brush truck which is unstable and poses a hazard to firefighters riding inside; b) plowing snow among our three fire stations; c) search details over rough terrain; d) medical assist dispatches; e) checking fire scenes with large acreage; and f) delivering supplies and hydration to fire fighters and fire police spread out over fire and crash scenes.
